Helena, mother of Roman Emperor Constantine, became the first Christian pilgrim when she set out in the year 326 A.D. for Jerusalem on a milestone journey that would bring Christianity into global prominence, establish Jerusalem as a religious center, and uncover evidence of important sites in Christ's ministry. Significant places of Christ's public life from Nazareth to Calvary are showcased beautifully here, as are churches founded by or associated with Helena (Churches of the Nativity and Holy Sepulcher, St. John Lateran, St. Peter's, and Santa Croce). Reminding viewers that Helena's journey is considered by many to be legend, this fine program features solid narration by Ben Kingsley, well-chosen artwork, tasteful background music by the City of London choir and a few re-enactments, as well as sensitively presented accounts of the apparition of the cross which inspired Constantine to victory and the various heavenly signs that motivated Helena's finding of the “true cross.” A bonus program, "King of Kings,” features a nicely chosen array of spirituals, pop, folk, and classical religious music set against images of Christ and the Holy Land. Recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (J. Reed)
