“Hip hop is the fountain of youth…” Quiz time! How many of you think that Dilated Peoples is a clever name for an eye-care center, Bow Wow is something a dog says, and Pastor Troy preaches down at the local church on Sundays? Well, get ready for reeducation with Hip Hop Immortals, a documentary lesson that demonstrates just how much of contemporary culture and lifestyle emanate from hip-hop. Using appealing graphics and imagery in a flashy music video-style, the subjects of fame, style, respect, alcohol, brand names, drugs, inspiration, family, apparel, jewelry, music videos, and desensitization recur as the story of hip-hop--from the roots of the graffiti artist/DJ/b-boy/MC idealism to the present-day industry feuds--is thoroughly examined in a loose timeline-like format that combines hard facts and personal opinion from a variety of sources. Although I'm always skeptical when such programs promise a wealth of stars (and rarely deliver), this documentary literally blew me away with the hit list of pertinent principals, including legends (Schooly D, Grand Master Melle Mel, Flava Flav), producers (Marley Marl, Jermaine Dupri, L.A. Reid), DJs (DJ Jazzy Jeff; and priceless words from the late Jam Master Jay), and current sensations (Snoop Dogg, Eve, Lil' Kim, Busta Rhymes, Bone Crusher, Jadakiss)---and the list goes on (we're talking at least 60 contributors). Featuring exceptional archival photos and footage, brief clips, rants and raps, and an incredible a cappella performance of the heartfelt “Industry” by Grammy-winner Wyclef Jean, the language in Hip Hop Immortals is at times coarse but also refreshingly candid and sincere. DVD extras include outtakes, extended interviews, and more. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (J. Williams)
