A moving tribute to the victims of September 11, 2001, this haunting hour-long HBO production (originally airing over the Memorial Day weekend) recounts the horrific events of the day as seen through a multitude of viewpoints--from former mayor Rudy Giuliani and many of his senior staff to various New Yorkers (in fact, the program draws on the collaboration of 16 news organizations and 118 individuals). Viewers will see explicit images of people jumping from the World Trade Center towers to their deaths, as well as scenes of frightened men and women rushing away from thick clouds of smoke and debris as the buildings fell. Intercut with the terrible images are solemn speeches, brief personal narratives, volunteer stories, and last phones calls to loved ones (by trapped victims). In Memoriam takes viewers from locations such as St. Patrick's Cathedral, Staten Island and Greenwich Street, to funerals and a family members' memorial at Ground Zero. Presented with a dignified, affecting soundtrack, performed by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, this authentic, touching, disturbing film offers a powerful and respectful memorial to the fallen. [Note: DVD extras include a DVD-ROM accessible tribute mosaic.] Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. Aud: C, P. (J. Williams)
