Not made by Martin Scorsese but, rather, with Scorsese's participation, writer/director Michael Henry Wilson's excellent documentary chronicles the shooting of Scorsese's film based on the life of the Dalai Lama, Kundun. Wilson, an accomplished filmmaker, not only had access to everyone connected with the making of the movie, he also includes a good deal of footage of the Dalai Lama talking about his childhood, his remembrances of Tibet and the coming of the Chinese army in the 1950s. An insightful, entertaining and enlightening program, the documentary not only offers a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the feature film, it also reminds us once again that the Chinese government is currently attempting to destroy Tibetan culture. Highly recommended across many different subject categories, from religious and political studies to filmmaking. Editor's Choice. Aud: H, C, P. (P. Van Vleck)
