Award-winning indie filmmaker Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused, Slacker, School of Rock, Fast Food Nation) makes his documentary debut with this profile of NCAA Division I college baseball coach Augie Garrido. With five National Championships under his belt (won over the course of four decades at two schools--California State University, Fullerton and University of Texas), Garrido brings an almost Zen-like aspect to his coaching—although, as Linklater's footage reveals, he's not above the occasional explosive tirade. In this thoughtful, measured portrait we watch Garrido explain his philosophy, while numerous friends, former players, other coaches, and pro-baseball players such as Roger Clemens speak of him with respect and admiration. Interspersed throughout are up-close-and-personal glimpses of practice games, team meetings, and dugout confabs. A solid portrait of a fascinating character, Inning by Inning is recommended.
