Using the same format as his Me & Isaac Newton (VL Online, which featured interviews with seven scientists), director Michael Apted's Inspirations offers a peek at the creative process through the work of seven contemporary artists: sculptor Nora Naranjo-Morse, painter Roy Lichtenstein, choreographer Edouard Lock, architect Tadao Ando, dancer Louise Lecavalier, glass artist Dale Chihuly and musician David Bowie. Offering insights across a wide range of topics--including beginning projects, taking criticism, and creative influences--this well-organized program mixes vignettes with interview clips. Lichtenstein wakes up with ideas, Lock encourages stretching one's limits, Naranjo-Morse enjoys mashing clay with her feet, and Bowie shows off his computer "verbasizer" program for help with drafting song lyrics. Segments take viewers into the world of the artist (visiting places in Seattle, Israel and Japan), affording the rare opportunity of watching these professionals at work. A colorful, fascinating program that captures some of the inspirations that drive these creative individuals, this reflective, candid documentary will appeal to fans wanting to see a favorite artist or simply those looking to ignite their own creative fires. Highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (J. Williams)
