Living up to its tagline—”Real life, filmed real fast”—the titular International Documentary Challenge allows participating directorial teams five days to complete a nonfiction short, working within specific genres (like biography and sports) on particular themes (such as faith and change). This collection presents 17 of the finest entries from 2006-08, with most of the docs hailing from the U.S., but also featuring works from Japanese, Israeli, Dutch, Chinese, and Canadian filmmakers. Standouts include Unfettering the Falcons (Laura Kissel and Niklas Vollmer), which ties together birds, football, and cars; Begging for Grace (Greg Scott), a profile of a homeless drug addict named D.J., who collects money from drivers at a busy intersection; Click Woosh (Reel Grrls), a tribute to Polaroid camera enthusiasts, and Bend and Bow (Profluence Productions), about dancer-turned-musical saw player Natalia Paruz. The International Documentary Challenge offers a means for novice moviemakers to gain experience and exposure, while also sharing unique and engaging stories. DVD extras include a discussion with the directors, and a classroom guide. Recommended. Aud: C, P. (K. Fennessy)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
