Burnin'. There's simply no better way to describe the sounds generated by a veritable supergroup of Latin (and other) jazz musicians in this concert, recorded in Miami (duh) at the Jackie Gleason Theater. Some of the names will be familiar to almost everyone, including pianist Chick Corea and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval; others, while they won't ring as many bells, are just as worthy, among them conguero Poncho Sanchez, timbale wizard Pete Escovedo, flutist Dave Valentin and vibes player Dave Samuels. Likewise for the Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 recorded material, which includes standards such as "Soul Sauce,” “A Night in Tunisia” (both of them co-written by Dizzy Gillespie, who himself played a lot of Latin-flavored jazz), “Oye Como Va,” and even the theme from “I Love Lucy” (for which the film changes to black & white, a clever and fun touch), along with lesser known fare. These people, and there are a lot of them (a full big band backs up the featured players), can all play; but the star is Sandoval, whose amazing acrobatics, plumbing the trumpet's lowest register, soaring to the highest and wailing through everything in between, are never less than impressive, if occasionally a bit meretricious. If you like this kind of music, you can't go wrong. Recommended. Aud: P. (S. Graham)
