After 2,000 years, people continue to believe that Jesus is the Son of God. But does the historical, archeological, and scientific evidence support this claim? Not everyone agrees. In Jesus: The Great Debate, based on theologian and bestselling author Dr. Grant R. Jeffrey's 1999 book of the same name, Jeffrey serves as host for an examination of questions related to messianic prophecies in the Old Testament, the authenticity of the Gospels, Jesus' miracles, and Christ's resurrection. Combining dramatic reenactments with talking-head interviews, the program's stated aim of presenting the views of both believers and non-believers is a little disingenuous in practice, since the preponderance of opinions are clearly from believers (for example: although the jury is still out on the Shroud of Turin's authenticity, a substantial amount of time here is devoted to encouraging viewers to see the so-called image of Christ as a “photograph” created by the energy of the Resurrection). The back of the box lists the copyright date as 2007, but the original VHS was released earlier in the decade. DVD extras include a bonus documentary on the Dead Sea Scrolls, featuring wonderful onsite photography and fascinating views of the documents themselves. Likely to appeal to Christian study groups, this is a strong optional purchase. Aud: P. (J. Reed)
