Sound bite from space: "Oh yeah? Well, when I was a young space cadet orbiting the Earth, NASA was so poor, I had to squeeze my own Tang." OK, I made that up, but we have come a long way baby, and John Glenn was there when the race for space was in its infancy four decades ago. While this program begins with fairly pedestrian newsreel footage and features old (and awful) public service announcements about MAN IN SPACE, be patient. John Glenn: An American Legend does finally get off the ground, braiding a high drama history of the space program together with a chronicle of Glenn's life (particularly his military and political career), detailing his triple orbit flight in 1962 along with his round-trip ticket to space 36 years later. Viewers will meet a pioneer in space exploration and a star-spangled hero who has, at the tender age of 77, become a poster boy for the elderly and America's newest heart-throb--take that Mr. Pitt. Highly recommended. Aud: I, J, H, C, P. (N. Plympton)
