Over the millennia, Ammonites, Moabites, Hebrews, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantine Christians, Bedouins, Arabs, British armies, and more, have either lived in or controlled what is now the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. As might be expected, a rich mix of art and architectural treasures from any number of these eras abound, and the video offers a generous sampling of same. Today's population is 95% Muslim, but women are not held to purdah (the seclusion of women from the sight of men or strangers); many have careers and wear Western-style fashions. (However, there remains great interest in traditional ethnic clothing which varies from region to region.) Because of its role in the Middle East peace process, Americans need to know more about this pivotal nation. Except for a completely gratuitous re-enactment of Salome's dance for Herod Antipas, this is an excellent video. Highly recommended. (R. Reagan)
