The June 6, 1944, D-Day invasion by Allied forces of Nazi-occupied France is, arguably, the single-most dissected and debated event in the history of World War II. This two-part BBC/Discovery Channel co-production adds insight into the little-known use of 3D aerial reconnaissance photographs that were consulted during the two years of planning prior to launching the invasion. Many of these photographs were classified immediately after the war, and their inclusion here—along with the exciting backstory on how the photos were taken—is one of the highlights of Last Heroes of D-Day. Also of note are interviews with surviving veterans of the campaign, who offer cogent recollections of their participation in the liberation of Western Europe. Indeed, it is easy to get misty-eyed over the spry British veterans, still looking sharp in their bright red dress uniforms and shining medals. Filmmaker Tim Dunn combines dramatic re-enactments with accompanying graphics, while historian Dan Snow provides erudite narration. A worthwhile addition to WWII collections, this is recommended.
