This is a crushing blow to lighthouse romantics who dream of solitary lanterns glowing softly in the misty morn, bringing weary sailors home to the harbor, to awaiting arms and hot flesh and...umm, you get the picture. Anyway, the lighthouse keepers interviewed here will be the first to tell you their job was often downright terrifying (as these huge towers could sway three feet in each direction during a storm) and extremely hard work. Keepers were often stranded in what amounted to a tall chimney--essentially held prisoner and cooped-up-for-weeks with other lighthouse guards (some of whom forgot their deodorant, I bet)--all the keeping vigil as the eyes of the seafarer. Accompanied by a lovely Irish soundtrack, the program spotlights numerous lighthouses around the Emerald Island and effectively captures the danger, beauty and awesome force of the sea. Recommended for general collections. Aud: P. (N. Plympton)
