Horatio Nelson was the greatest naval hero in British history and it has been said that not until the death of Princess Diana had there ever been such an outpouring of grief throughout the nation. The story of Nelson is told in a most unusual way, through the search for the remains of his command ship, the Agamemnon, the most powerful warship of its time--the combination of man and ship made for an unstoppable military force. The Agamemnon did not have the glory of being defeated in battle; she ran aground while off the coast of Uruguay in what is known today as the Rio de la Plata, or the River Plate. This video takes viewers on a search for the ship's remains and skillfully weaves in the story of Nelson and the final voyage of the mighty warship. I will not reveal the results of the search because that provides the film with most of its suspense as the salvagers try to overcome political bureaucracy, bad weather, and broken equipment in their efforts. The historical part of the video is well done and will provide viewers with a better understanding of how Britain became the pre-eminent naval power in the world, a position she held virtually unchallenged until WWI. Also available for $19.95 each: The Last Broadside and Galley of the Gods (all 3 vols., $49.95, in boxed set). Recommended. (J. Carlson)
