"The universe is full of magical things waiting for our minds to grow sharper." So notes one of the seven scientists profiled in this inspiring and infinitely fascinating ode to science from filmmaker Michael Apted (Nell, 42 Up). The magnificent seven, ranging in age from 33 to 81, speak eloquently about how they became interested in their various fields, and of their desire to unlock the mysteries of the universe ("uncharted territory is the only one worth going into," one remarks). While some stories are more accessible than others, theoretical physicist Michio Kaku is, perhaps, the film's true breakout star. As a child, he related not to Flash Gordon, but to Dr. Zarkoff, building an atom smasher in his garage while he was still a high school student. On the more down to earth side, Patricia Wright, a Brooklyn housewife, was so fascinated by her pet monkey, she uprooted her family and established a lemur preserve in Madagascar, saving a rain forest in the process. Even when the talk turns to cognitive research and quantum theory, Apted always keeps the focus on the human face of science (which, as Kaku states, can be "more fascinating that any murder mystery"). A wonderful program for both students and recreational viewers, Me & Isaac Newton is enthusiastically recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (K. Lee Benson)
