This is the quintessential talking heads video--three very intelligent talking heads. Produced at California's Esalen Institute, the video consists of a "trialogue" between three men: Rupert Sheldrake, biologist and developer of the concept of morphogenetic fields; Ralph Abraham, a mathematician with a special interest in chaos theory; and Terence McKenna, an ethno-pharmacologist, shamanist, and raconteur. Sitting cross-legged on the floor the men expound on creation, imagination, chaos, memory and habits in nature, Gaia, the new world paradigm, and how their psychedelic experiences have shaped their world views. Although an audience may be glimpsed in the mirror behind the speakers, the men never interact with them (or with each other, very much). From time to time, visuals and "trance music" waft across the screen like New Age punctuation. The video's tone of gurus imparting wisdom to the unlettered masses gets to be a bit overpowering at times. A more straight-forward approach to the subjects, and a more critical, interactive format would have resulted in a livelier, more informative program. This video's appeal is limited to think tanks and university libraries. Not recommended for general collections. (S. Rees)
