Within the framework of the road tour, we are treated to a series of vignettes large and small which gradually allow the artist to reveal himself. We follow Duke Ellington through his daily routine (solid breakfast, no caffeine, grace before!), remembering the birthday of an old friend (Ella Fitzgerald), and carving out time and space for composition. We see him in public honor, receiving academic degrees. We watch him perform a unique composition destined to be played but once, as well as a splendid bit from his In the Beginning God (which can rival Copland's In the Beginning any day). Best of all we hear his reflections on his art and learn of his personal relationship and professional partnership with Billy Strayhorn. An intimate, revealing portrait of the man, public and private; and composer, popular and recondite. There is a wealth of video material on Ellington; this one has a solid place on the list. Recommended for most collections. (J. Reed)

As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
