What appears to be a documentary on the career of film critic and historian turned filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich actually focuses on a specific moment in his life: the making of the 1981 film They All Laughed and his relationship with one of the film's costars, Dorothy Stratten, a romance cut short when she was murdered by her estranged husband (Stratten's story has been told in the films Star 80 and Death of a Centerfold). This documentary places the relationship at the center of Bogdanovich's career, which began with acclaim (The Last Picture Show, Paper Moon) and stumbled in a couple of major flops (At Long Last Love, Nickelodeon). His modern screwball comedy They All Laughed was in part inspired by his rejuvenating romance with Stratten, a Playboy Playmate and fledgling actress. Her death plunged Bogdanovich into a depression and subsequent financial failure that almost ruined him. Filmmaker Bill Teck's One Day Since Yesterday celebrates They All Laughed as the last expression of 1970s-style personal filmmaking, while contemporary directors such as Wes Anderson, Noah Baumbach, and Quentin Tarantino praise the film as an overlooked classic and an influence on their work. Jeff Bridges, Colleen Camp, Ben Gazzara, Cybill Shepherd, and Bogdanovich's daughters (who appeared in the film and were deeply affected by the death of Stratten) are also among those interviewed. This doesn't offer much insight into Bogdanovich's career as a whole, but it does present an interesting slice of film history, albeit one that will only be of interest to hardcore film buffs.
