Orchid hunters, known as orchidophiles, are often described as brave, passionate, and foolish, but just what is it about orchids--boasting over 20,000 known species, and considered the "sexiest" of flowers--that makes them attractive enough to seriously risk life and limb to collect? In this NOVA episode, viewers follow the journey of Tom Hart Dyke, an amateur orchid enthusiast who was kidnapped by guerrillas and held hostage for nine months while hunting for orchids in Central America. Undeterred by his experiences, he then made his way to New Guinea, pitting himself against snakes, insects, and headhunters in the hopes of discovering a new species to name after his grandmother. In typical NOVA fashion, Orchid Hunter turns scientific illumination into an adventure rivaling those of Indiana Jones, filled with murder, mayhem, and arson (not to mention more than one instance of urination). Combining location footage, stunning close-ups of flowers, and interviews with scientists and journalists (including Susan Orlean, author of The Orchid Thief, on which the film Adaptation was based), this will appeal to a wide range of viewers, from armchair travelers to backyard gardeners. Highly recommended. Aud: C, P. (J. Asala)
