This authorized documentary chronicles the climb to tennis stardom of twentysomething sisters Venus and Serena Williams, from their Compton roots (dad Richard fought off gang attacks to get the girls practice time at neighborhood courts) to their Wimbledon victories and current (April 2003) ranking as the top two women's players in the world. Combining archival footage, interviews, and exclusive shots of practice, the Williams girls (who both turned pro at the age of 14) are profiled here, along with the powerhouse overseer papa Richard (note the "raising" in the title), who is known for his careful command of his daughters' celebrity (in one scene, we see him brusquely concluding a photo shoot for Serena that he feels has run too long). Gaming highlights and behind-the-scenes shots of the girls' matches and daily routines are coupled with scenes of Venus and Serena playing with pets and giving each other gentle ribbing (who's a better cartwheeler, who's smarter, etc.), providing a well-rounded look at the lives of these unaffectedly good-natured and poised superstars. And even though a generous portion of the program relates the life story of Richard, he's an amusing character, and his pivotal role in Venus and Serena's skills, fame, and fortune cannot be overlooked. Sure to be a popular addition to sports and general collections, this is highly recommended. [Note: DVD extras include featurettes on "Training the Williams Way," extended Williams' interviews, “Grand Slam Techniques,” and interviews with producer/director Terry Jervis and tennis champ Pete Sampras.] Aud: H, C, P.
