The Amish people are becoming America's most scrutinized religious minority, confounding critics by not only surviving but thriving on the eve of the 21st century. Their way of life is shaped by a love of the land, strong family and community ties, and a deep religious faith strengthened by their identity as a "peculiar" people tested by centuries of persecution. This video focuses on the Ohio Amish, home to one of the largest Amish communities in America. A bit of Anabaptist history is explained, and the seeming contradictions or "riddles" of Amish explored, such as their ideas about limiting the use of autos and other modern technology. The Amish are fond of saying that "only good wood will split," and they manage to co-exist peacefully while maintaining boundaries not only with their "English" neighbors, but also with other plain sects. The video shows the Amish on the farm, at auctions, quilting bees, and other communal events. An interesting segment features an interview with a man who lived among the Amish for many years. Despite some shaky camera work, this video is more informative than the producer's Amish Values & Virtues. Recommended for public libraries, especially in the Ohio area. (S. Rees)
