A three part series, each of the volumes in Reinventing the World focuses on various ways we can change the world to make life better for all its inhabitants. In the first volume, Work & Time, host Des Kennedy looks at the role work plays in our lives, asking what is work, where is the joy in our work, and why is our increasing penchant for working harder and longer not really working out? Emphasizing the need to balance the demands of work and still make time for meaningful activities, the program also looks at the differences between a job and a career, suggests ways to avoid the squirrel in the cage syndrome, and encourages viewers to examine societal values toward work. In addition, the video offers concrete examples of good, meaningful work, including a retraining program for Canada's homeless, a man who finds joy working as an Elvis impersonator in Mexico, and a woman who loves her deadline-free existence growing produce and raising chickens. The two other titles in the series are Food, which proposes designing a food production system that promotes wise land use, health and affordability; and Cities, which shows how urban planning can promote responsible use of natural resources and allow for sustainable growth. Highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (L. Stevens)
