The CrossFit Games began as a small event in 2007, held on a ranch in Aromas, California, and deploying CrossFit training equipment and the company’s own metabolic exercise programs in competitions for both men and women. Over time, the Games have gained massive popularity, held annually in larger and larger venues, including professional football stadiums.
But Covid-19 scaled back the 2020 edition of the Games, returning to that ranch in Aromas and keeping the crowds away to reduce the possibility of infection. For the athletes, however, the Games were a typically arduous—some might say crazy—series of complex challenges, one after another, mixing weightlifting with all manner of sprints, swimming, pull-ups, footraces, etc.
This documentary does what sports docs typically do, tracking the progress and backgrounds of the top competitors while capturing whatever difficulties were faced by the host organization. But mostly we’re watching bulked-up young adults performing Herculean feats and looking for the inner resolve to stick with the contests— one more step, one more lap, one more rep. If you enjoy this kind of superhuman activity, this is for you. Strongly recommended. Aud: K, E, I, J, H, C, P.
