After playing their final show in 2000, the Smashing Pumpkins' band members went their separate ways. Narrated by frontman Billy Corgan, If All Goes Wrong offers an audiovisual diary intermixed with concert footage snippets capturing the 2007 revival of his alternative rock outfit (with soundman Kerry Brown providing supplementary voiceover). The word “reunion” doesn't quite apply here, since Corgan assembled a different lineup and primarily performed new music. Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin returned, while guitarist Jeff Schroeder, bassist Ginger Reyes, and keyboard player Lisa Harriton replaced original bandmates D'Arcy and James Iha, who chose to opt out. Although Corgan discusses each song in detail, most are only partially heard as the new configuration debuts in Paris before returning to the States for gigs in Asheville, NC and San Francisco. Throughout, Corgan's comments alternate with remarks from ticketholders (both pleased and disappointed), crew members, and sympathetic outsiders, such as author Laura Albert (aka J.T. Leroy), and the Who's Pete Townshend, who understands Corgan's desire to forge ahead. From start to finish, Corgan's reflections and hope alternate with petulance and self-pity—which, to quote Talking Heads, is the same as it ever was. Much more enjoyable is the second disc, which features a solid 21-song set from SF's legendary Fillmore Auditorium, combining tracks from 2007's Zeitgeist with new tunes, rarities, and a raucous cover of Jefferson Airplane's “White Rabbit” (while resolutely steering clear of the Pumpkins' classic hits). Presented in DTS, SRS 5.1 (i.e., circle surround), and stereo, DVD extras include a five-song rehearsal set, and extended interviews with Townshend and the “Ghost Children” (Corgan's term for his fans).
