"Going on a pilgrimage without a change of heart, brings no reward from God. For it is by practicing virtue and not mere motion of the feet that brings one to heaven." Despite these words from the Book of Lismore, we get to see plenty of "motion of feet" in this 2-video set, in which segments are devoted to the ecumenical community of Iona, Scotland; the mountain Croagh Patrick in Ireland; the water-laden Lourdes, France; and the penitential Fatima, Portugal. A brief history of each place is given, and the photography is very well done, but the focus here is on the people who visit these places and the reasons they come: to give thanks for a good year or a recovery from illness, to keep a promise made to a deceased or recovered loved one, to study and commune, or--the ultimate--to request spiritual or physical healing. I would have preferred fewer of those walking scenes, and more solid information (What kind of year-round staff does Iona have? What are the ecological effects of decades of Irish climbing up Croagh Patrick? Does science have an explanation for the "sun rotating on its axis and descending to earth" at Fatima?), but, overall, this is a nice, reasonably priced, nonjudgmental set. Aud: H, C, P. (K. Glaser)
