In this documentary aimed at those recovering from the ravaging physical and emotional effects of a stroke, the overriding message is one of hope, reminding viewers that recovery is possible, although seldom easy and never effortless. Strokes are sudden, unexpected, and usually life-changing. As one man interviewed notes, his stroke “changed everything about my life—forever. All at once.” Divided into 19 sections, Stroke Recovery covers a wide range of related topics, including goals, depression, caregivers, public embarrassment, impact on family, support groups, religious and spiritual topics, sexuality and intimacy, new drugs and therapies, and rehabilitation. The tone is optimistic yet realistic: one survivor notes, “If attitude was all it took, I'd be running marathons.” Those profiled range in age from children and young people to middle-aged and older, from those whose stroke was recent to others who have been recovering for decades. Also offering insights are caregivers, family members and friends, and doctors and other health professionals. An informative guide for those dealing with the aftermath of a stroke, this is recommended. Aud: C, P. (F. Gardner)
