Showing, through interviews, how parents, siblings, friends, and children of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds, ages, and circumstances, cope with the loss of a loved one, Surviving Death explores how each comes to terms with grief as well as the inevitable life-altering changes that accompany loss by disease, accident, and sudden illness. This title presents its subjects in an honest, sensitive, unrehearsed manner, and the individuals' circumstances are varied enough that many viewers will find a situation to which they can relate. The video does not use an analytical approach by telling viewers what they should be feeling, what lies ahead, or by providing pat answers, but rather allows them to discover for themselves that grieving is an individual process that everyone reacts to differently, as people progress through stages at their own pace, often re-examining their values, relationships, and purpose in life. This title would be useful for anyone who is grieving or as a resource for professionals who work with those who are dealing with personal loss. Recommended. (L. Stevens)
