Strictly speaking, the title here could have been California's Big Energy Gamble, since this episode of NOVA focuses almost entirely on Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's advocacy of green energy to rejuvenate California's disastrous economy. But given the fact that any successful effort in California would immediately suggest a nationwide model, this documentary ultimately offers a bold vision of our energy future. As Schwarzenegger—who is interviewed here—struggles to roll back California's greenhouse gas emissions to their 1990 levels while also promising state residents no increase in energy costs, viewers will see how California is a hotbed of energy-related innovation and implementation, championed by a host of celebrities. With the likes of green-energy guru Ed Begley, Jr. and Bill Nye “The Science Guy” demonstrating simple and ambitious solutions to energy consumption and usage efficiency, the vision of a sustainable-energy future seems both likely and inevitable given the threat of global warming. From plug-in hybrids in San Francisco to gigantic wind-turbine farms in the Tehechapi Valley, The Big Energy Gamble—which also offers plenty of expert perspectives on the relevant science—illustrates how Schwarzenegger's gamble (including advocacy for nuclear energy, among other options) could turn out to be either his greatest political legacy…or his biggest political embarrassment. DVD extras include printable materials for educators. Recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (J. Shannon)
