I saw Deep Impact. It scared me. But I was able to sleep that night because of one reassuring thought which I played over and over in my mind: "It's only a movie." After watching Final Target: Planet Earth, I have no such calming rationalizations. Affected, perhaps, by the Halloween-ish, eerie music playing in the background, I was chilled at NASA scientists' repeated admissions that there are over 2,000 asteroids and comets that are "potentially hazardous to Earth" (read: could end life as we know it) and that astronomers have only charted about 10%. Continuing on this frightening train of thought, one expert declares, "If an asteroid were to hit; most likely, we wouldn't know until the moment it hit." With the popularity of Deep Impact and Armageddon, this informative documentary, which separates the science from the fiction, will be a welcome addition. The other two titles in The Cosmic Travelers Series (series price: $39.95)--which explores comets and meteors and asteroids (oh my)--are: Sudden Impact: Meteors and Comets and & Asteroids. Recommended. (J Glatzer)
