Regardless of your position on bullfighting—for many, it's either a beautiful, balletic ritual or an abhorrent, outdated form of brutality—The Matador will dazzle you with the sights and sounds of Spain's most majestic cultural tradition. Indeed, this film—which follows David Fandila's three-year quest to become Spain's greatest bullfighter—may be the finest ever made about bullfighting and matadors. Known as “El Fandi” to legions of admirers throughout Spain and Latin America, Fandila was obsessed since boyhood with the goal of joining the elite “100 Club” of matadors who've won 100 corridas (or bullfights) in a single season. Skillfully directed by Stephen Higgins, The Matador follows Fandila through three seasons (2003-05) on the grueling Spanish bullfighting circuit, culminating in an astonishing sequence in which Fandila must conquer six bulls in one match. Along the way, Fandila experiences a variety of highs and lows, including the injuries from goring that all matadors accept as an occupational hazard. In addition to interviews with Fandila's supportive parents and brother, the film also features several experts who offer differing perspectives on the bullfighting tradition, as well as PETA protestors, who claim that bullfighting is a form of animal cruelty that must be stopped. Combining an insightful exploration of the emotional and physical complexities of bullfighting together with gripping scenes capturing the amazing skill of Fandila as he performs before rabidly enthusiastic crowds, The Matador's breathtaking images are nicely backed by John Califra's brilliant, energetic score. DVD/Blu-ray extras include a complete 46-minute corrida filmed in Jaén, Spain in October 2005, a featurette introduction to bullfighting, a music video, and a photo gallery of highlights from Fandila's career. With the caveat that the film does include disturbing images of bulls being killed in the ring, this excellent documentary is highly recommended. Aud: C, P. (J. Shannon)
