Okay, I admit I was a little concerned about The Power of Music when I saw that the cover art sported a backward treble staff. Not to worry: this is an outstanding overview of how music as a medium boosts learning and contributes to therapeutic healing, featuring some of the music industry's best (including Bobby McFerrin, Gladys Knight, B.B. King, Dave Stewart, Craig Chaquico, and Mickey Hart) and top psychologists and physicians (including Dr. Oliver Sacks). Exploring the human brain's responses to music, the program covers the effects of prenatal exposure to music, music as a learning tool to increase cognitive abilities, music as a therapy for chronic pain and patients with neurological disorders, and music's role in the anthropological and biological study of world cultures, among other topics. A terrific look at cutting-edge research in a fascinating subject area, this is highly recommended. Aud: C, P. (L. Stevens)
