The History Channel scores another win with this top-notch documentary series chronicling the history of organized crime in five major mafia centers around the globe: Sicily, Russia, Colombia, China, and India. Each of the 50-minute programs looks at a particular country's culture and social structure, as well as the historical events that led to organized crime gaining a stronghold in the first place (and what keeps it in operation today). Viewers also become familiar with some of the historic “crime bosses” who played a key role in the struggle for power, learn more about the mafia wars, and are introduced to some of the most dangerous leaders in contemporary criminal syndicates. A historic timeline is included with significant events spotlighted for each country. Featuring interviews with citizens, scholars, and government officials, The World History of Organized Crime presents an honest view of the subject (one of the best I've seen, though the graphic violence is not for the fainthearted), and explains why we as Americans should care about these overseas cartels. Highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (L. Stevens)
