British actor Paul Blackthorne (best known here for his role on the CW television series Arrow) and Australian photographer Mister Basquali team for this political documentary road trip that takes them from New York to Los Angeles. Shot after the 2008 presidential election, This American Journey offers a balanced portrait of contemporary America, interviewing articulate individuals who are urban and rural, white and black, working class and business professional (one small business owner—who complains about the challenges imposed by major corporations—tried to make a difference by running for president himself, but only received 254 votes). The tone here is mostly respectful, with some interesting stops along the way, including the Ronald McDonald Foundation in Pittsburgh. DVD extras include deleted scenes, extended interviews, and a photo gallery. A solid state-of-the-union snapshot of the people in a multicultural nation who face issues ranging from economic collapse to a two-front war while still trying to pursue the American Dream, this is recommended.
