From the messages preserved in ancient Egyptian pyramids to the cornerstones laid by Freemasons today, men and women throughout history have been driven to leave timely traces of their presence. Part history, part archeology, all pop culture lesson, this light-hearted documentary examines our "time capsule" attitudes: from the silliness of wanting to preserve everyday stuff to the importance we place in its significance to the future of mankind. Interviews include a chat with a manufacturer about the various types of commercial time capsules on the market and the president of the International Time Capsule Society about his mission to register all existing time capsules. In addition, an archeologist talks about his quest for meaning in everyday human trash and the archivist of the Andy Warhol Museum gushes about the goodies in Warhol's 600-plus cardboard time capsules. The program also includes tips for putting together a time capsule and contains archival footage from some notable projects of the past, including the 1930's "Crypt of Civilization" at Georgia's Oglethorpe University, scheduled to open (mark your calendars) on Thursday, May 28, 8113 A.D. and Carl Sagan's controversial Voyager II project. Interest in time capsules after the turn of this decade/century/millennium should make this a popular item. Recommended for larger collections. Aud: J, H, C, P. (A. Cantú)
