The tragic century-old tale of the Titanic is full of human interest stories, spanning locations ranging from Belfast, Ireland, where the luxury ocean liner was built, to the town of Southampton, England, which supplied many of the doomed crew members and suffered more loss of life than any other city. The Titanic was actually a floating city, with society's rich and elite being pampered while poor Irish immigrants hoping to start a new life in America languished below decks. Over two dozen countries were affected, particularly Italy, which provided cooks and waiters for the ship's upscale restaurants. While some prefer to believe that women and children were spared major loss of life, the truth is that families in steerage mostly went down with the ship. Filmmaker Edward Hart's Titanic & Me employs vivid dramatic re-creations to chronicle stories of men accused of cowardice, such as White Star president Bruce Ismay, who took a place in the lifeboat and was the subject of widespread censure, particularly from yellow journalist William Randolph Hearst. There were also examples of self sacrifice and heroism, such as the Titanic band playing on, and the men who rowed back in lifeboats to try to rescue survivors floundering in the freezing water. Although the loss of life was massive, the tragedy led to the enactment of safety and reform measures, improved communications, and underscored the need for the provision of adequate numbers of lifeboats.
