While it may appear to be a traditional how-to hunting video, this 49-minute program is not actually a tutorial but an exploration of hunting culture in South Carolina's Santee Delta presented in a TV newsmagazine format. It opens with a brief history lesson on how the freshwater delta was settled and cleared for rice cultivation and ducks were introduced to the habitat centuries ago and then launches into a series of brief episodes that spotlight different aspects of the culture. Program hosts Charles Waring and Gus Smythe take the viewers on a hunting expedition in the marshes with location host Pierre Manigault and we return to their outing throughout the. International firearms expert G. Harris Jordan spotlights classic hunting rifles going back hundreds of years. Burton Moore surveys the history of duck decoys and displays a collection of historical artifacts worth thousands of dollars. Duck-calling enthusiast Michael T. Lalich discusses different duck call whistles and demonstrates the proper technique for use in hunting. Lowcountry chef F. Preston Wilson offers a tutorial on pan-frying fresh duck cutlets. A detour to a traditional Lowcountry oyster roast and a brief discussion of local bourbon don't quite make the case for their inclusion and a nod to the history of environmental conservation in South Carolina is bewildering short on information. The segments are brief and have an easy, laid-back quality to them; it's not slick or overproduced but it is professional and well-made and the program moves swiftly as it jumps between segments. Given that, the tight focus on hunting culture will limit interest to hunting enthusiasts; local interest will vary by region. Bonus features include an additional recipe, how to make a TWA Bloody Mary, and a gun safety tutorial for children. The unrated program features no objectionable language or adult subject matter but it does include guns and gunfire and shows ducks being shot out of the sky. Optional purchase. Aud: P. (S. Axmaker)
