Based on the quality of the work he produced during his short lifetime (1979-2008), Perth-born Australian actor Heath Ledger certainly deserves a documentary tribute, although it's hard to resist being skeptical, especially with the word “unauthorized” in the title. Ultimately, it doesn't matter whether the producers truly cared about their subject or were simply trying to cash in on his untimely demise, since this program covers the facts in a respectful manner, while packing in plenty of well-spoken interview clips with Ledger from chat shows and premieres (the clips are unidentified, although the end credits cite the sources—E! Entertainment, Reuters Television, etc.). As this is an Australian production, Ledger's roles in Candy, Two Hands, and Ned Kelly receive substantial attention, but Brokeback Mountain and The Dark Knight (for which Ledger received posthumous Oscar and Golden Globe awards), still rightfully take up the most screen time here. The program also offers a non-intrusive look at Ledger's relationship with Brokeback Mountain costar Michelle Williams and their daughter, Matilda Rose. DVD extras include bonus featurettes. A strong optional selection. Aud: P. (K. Fennessy)
