"...if I can get to the heart of Dublin, I can get to the heart of all the cities of the world," said author James Joyce. And in his landmark 1922 novel Ulysses, the Irish literary genius did precisely that. This half-hour roam down the byways and over the bridges of the emerald city takes viewers into the heart of Joyce's Dublin. Using the context of Ulysses, host Patrick Ryan introduces the novel briefly, and then follows the ambulatory journey of Ulysses' Leopold Bloom as he makes his way through Dublin, stopping off at the Martello Tower at Sandycove, the Sandymount Strand, the Dublin Quays, the National Library of Ireland, Davy Byrne's Pub, and Glasnevin Cemetery, among other places on June 16th, 1904 (the single day of the novel). In addition to pointing out the sights and sounds of Dublin's streets, Ryan quotes pertinent passages from the novel, and offers background information on Dublin as it was in Joyce's time. Winner of a Silver Award at the Houston International Film Festival, among others, this is highly recommended for university libraries and public libraries with larger literary collections.
