We Thought You'd Never Ask consists entirely of interviews with a diverse group of individuals with autism. Hearing them talk about their lives offers a very different way of thinking about, defining, and understanding the disorder—in fact, it may even leave viewers questioning the use of the word “disorder” to describe their condition. Several high-functioning, very verbal people are featured here, along with others who need an adaptive device to communicate. Stereotypes about autism are certain to be challenged as viewers watch a girl—who “looks” mentally disabled—slowly type her response to the question “What is autism?” on a machine held by a caregiver; her facial expressions display boredom and listlessness, but the device suddenly utters, in an ironic monotone, “Autism is a way of life awash in emotions … emotions rule me.” In their replies to other queries, the subjects explore challenges with autism, good or helpful aspects, support issues, and advice for interacting with people with autism. The answers are sometimes a bit vague or rambling, but also usually creative and insightful (and always authentic). Encouraging viewers to look beyond labels and/or appearances, this affordable and unique program is definitely recommended. Aud: C, P. (E. Gieschen)
