The latest entry from PBS's award-winning series for teens In the Mix looks at what it means to be "normal." Although kids in this age group typically want desperately to fit in and not be considered different, this episode introduces viewers to some kids who are different and are working to break down social and physical barriers. Among the many teens profiled, viewers meet kids who have lost limbs, struggle with learning disabilities, are deaf, live in a foster home, or are gay, learning about the challenges each face in trying to gain an education, as well as the obstacles they've overcome. The common theme that surfaces as these youths share their struggles is that they have the same feelings, wants, hopes and dreams as all teens, and are willing to work hard to achieve them. Where the unknown or different tends to make people afraid and exclusionary, this program focuses on the commonalities shared by kids everywhere, helping them to replace social barriers with bridges. Highly recommended. Aud: J, H, P. (L. Stevens)
