The idea behind this video is, unfortunately, far better than the execution. Mike Burstyn is the host for this Yiddish Sing-Along, which brings back the old favorites of the shtetl, the early immigrants in America, and the Yiddish Theatre. Together with a group of singers, Burstyn introduces each song with a brief overview of its meaning, and then it is sung. English subtitles are provided on the bottom of the screen-but they appear erratically. None of the songs seem to be translated in their entirety. Songs include: "Oyfn Pripetshik," "Maya Yidishe Meydele," and "Lomir Ale Zingen" ("Let's All Sing" - that one we figured out), among others. Clearly, the performers' hearts are in the material, but-since the program is aimed towards general audiences--the format is likely to frustrate any non-Yiddish speaking viewer (which would be just about everyone who watched the tape). Not recommended. (Available from: MRC Video, 71 West 23rd St., New York, NY 10010.)
