The 15 years of the title of this introspective Israeli drama refers to the time that Yoav (Oded Leopold), a 42-year-old architect, has been with his partner Dan (Udi Persi). What appears to be a stable, strong relationship, however, begins to crack when Yoav's best friend, photographer Alma (Ruti Asarsai), announces that she is pregnant at the opening of her new exhibit and Dan shows signs of interest of starting his own family. Yoav sees all this as pressure to become more domestic and it appears to ignite a full-fledge midlife crisis and a spiral into self-destructive behavior. Director Yuval Hadadi takes a measured, slow approach to this intimate character drama, focusing on Yoav as he retreats into resentment and becomes outright hostile in his behavior. Along the way, he gives viewers a look at the cosmopolitan culture of Tel Aviv and the accepting, inclusive gay community that Yoav rejects. And while it's hard to like Yoav, who is vain and self-centered, Hadidi invites us to see how his refusal to confront his unresolved emotional issues unravels his life. This is a foreign-language art house drama with a LGBTQ theme and it can be a tough watch, so its audience will be limited. It is, however, an accomplished film and its observations on relationships, family, denial, and self-destructive tendencies can be appreciated by all audiences willing to give the film a chance.
