Matt Berry and Scoot McNairy are both respectable actors. Berry has reached an almost cult status with his role in What We Do in the Shadows. McNairy has a strong resume including roles in Argo, Killing Them Softly, and 12 Years A Slave. So it’s mind-boggling that these two would lend themselves to a movie like Indican Pictures’ Angry White Man.
There’s…an insulting amount of stupidity found throughout this film, and it is yet another example of a film attempting to parody “redneck” and “good ol’ boy” culture but failing miserably. Bob Hardison plays Skeeter, who goes on a road trip following a disastrous wedding to see his idol Bulldog Hayes (Berry). Scoot plays his buddy Walt, and Steve Agee plays Floyd. They both accompany Skeeter as they go on a road trip to meet his idol. Chaos ensues. Entertainment does not.
The jokes here fall incredibly flat, and it feels like there was some bizarre inside joke with everyone involved to get the stalest performances possible. Berry brings his usual charisma, but even he cannot save this film. Angry White Man may actually make you angry after you finish it, yet that is definitely not the filmmaker’s intention. Devotees of Berry or McNairy may find a reason to view this, but it is highly not recommended.
