What looks like a brazen rip-off of Bridesmaids is actually a pre-existing Off-Broadway play, adapted and directed by screenwriter Leslye Headland, although this females-behaving-badly farce might be more accurately titled Hangoverette. Regan (Kirsten Dunst) is a high-achiever, acting as maid-of-honor in the NYC wedding of friend Becky (Rebel Wilson), who—despite her plus-sized physiognomy and nickname "pigface"—is the first of her high-school class of 1999 BFFs to get married. The others in their quartet, Gena (Lizzy Caplan) and Katie (Isla Fisher), are a pair of promiscuous, coked-up party-girl wild cards, who accidentally tear Becky's prized wedding dress after a bachlorette bash goes awry. In the predawn hours, Regan, Gena, and Katie dash around desperately trying to fix the rip, and—with less success—avoid the temptations of drugs, alcohol, strip clubs, old boyfriends, and other males in the wedding party. Smart performances, an energetic narrative, and occasional flickers of insight and gravitas make Bachelorette more than just a rote slob comedy, although bona fide classic it ain't. A strong optional purchase. [Note: DVD/Blu-ray extras include audio commentary by writer-director Leslye Headland, a behind-the-scenes featurette (5 min.), bloopers (2 min.), and trailers. Bottom line: a decent extras package for an uneven comedy.] (C. Cassady)
