Beautiful Beings is a visually stunning film that delves into the tumultuous world of adolescence, where a group of violent boys befriend a victim of abuse, leading to a dark but ultimately hopeful journey. While it bears similarities to classic coming-of-age films like Kids and Stand by Me, Beautiful Beings sets itself apart by introducing intriguing plot twists that defy easy categorization. It's a film that packs a powerful punch, albeit one that may be difficult to stomach for some viewers.
Beautiful Beings starts off with Balli (Áskell Einar Pálmason), a young boy who has suffered unthinkable abuse. But as the story unfolds, we are introduced to three rambunctious boys and their families. Despite his quirky interests and bad haircut, Balli is an outcast who struggles to find his voice. When he finally stands up for himself, he is brutally attacked and loses an eye, forcing him to wear a temporary mask. Balli's mother is a drug addict who often leaves him hungry and alone, while his father is incarcerated. It only takes 15 minutes of Beautiful Beings to feel a deep sense of despair for the injustices in the world.
The film’s shift in focus from victimized Balli to a group of would-be bullies and their families reveals an interest in exploring the societal influences on and consequences of violent behavior. They aren't the bullies who harassed Balli一they are actually three popular boys named Konni (Viktor Benóný Benediktsson), Siggi (Snorri Rafn Frímannsson) and Addi (Birgir Dagur Bjarkason), who are always getting into mischief. One day, they come across Balli self-harming and drinking what appears to be moonshine from a plastic bottle in the bathroom. They have no concern for him and make him down the entire bottle of booze at once while laughing at him.
But then, as if by magic, there's a moment of kindness, which seems almost miraculous in the hellish world the movie has shown so far. Balli, in pain and barely able to walk, is aided by Addi, who decides to assist him in getting back to his house. Despite the reluctance of his friends, Addi brings them along, for they are a tight-knit group.
As they witness the disheveled and chaotic state of Balli's home, Addi's compassion is further stirred. The next day, he returns alone, and from the depths of misery, an unlikely friendship emerges.
Overall, Beautiful Beings showcases that despite portraying violent behavior, the troubled youth still possess a degree of kindness and attractiveness, emphasizing that they are not solely defined by the negative aspects of their lives.
