From the producer of Once Were Warriors comes another intensely visceral and volatile drama of lovers divided by cultural differences...not to mention a baseball bat-wielding father. His name is Ivan, an embittered and prejudiced Croatian who has emigrated with his family to New Zealand, which he calls "the bottom of the earth." His defiant daughter Nina (stunning newcomer Aleksandra Vujcic) dresses provocatively and works in a Chinese restaurant where she meets Eddie (Julian Arahanga), a Maori cook. Ivan's rage is further fueled by the news that Nina has agreed to an in-name-only marriage to a Chinese man to secure him citizenship and her the money to escape her father's house. The unfair NC-17 rating is for one sex scene that is no more graphic than anything in Basic Instinct. Recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
