While it's admirable that a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of this DVD will be donated to breast cancer research, both viewers and researchers would be better served if the former simply mailed a check for $15 to the latter. Adapted by Daniel Wright from his play Colored Eggs, this is a well-meaning but stilted film about personal transformation among patients and acquaintances in a Southern medical center. Betty, an eccentric older woman (played with lip-smacking gusto by Faye Dunaway), is courted by an old beau (acted with an equal lack of restraint by Tom Skerritt), and befriended by new arrival Amber (Lauren Holly), a beautician with a tortured past, who encourages Betty to give up her cantankerous ways and accept the kindness of others. At the same time, a troubled attendant named Jason (Ian Somerhalder) falls in love with Amber, and learns about life's preciousness and the joy of serving the less fortunate. As might be predicted, this scenario provides ample opportunity for tearful revelations and happiness in the face of suffering, but it's all directed so stiffly by Martin Guigui that despite the experienced cast, it comes across as terribly amateurish. Good intentions; bad movie. Not recommended. [Note: DVD extras include interviews with cast and crew, a collection of deleted scenes and outtakes, and featurettes on breast cancer victims. Bottom line: a decent extras package for a disappointing film.] (F. Swietek)
