Some impressive talent lurks around the edges of this Judd Apatow wannabe about two high school guys looking to get laid before senior prom. The writer is Parks and Recreation producer Alan Yang, who has recruited some P&R friends—including Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, and Aziz Ansari—for small roles that give a definite boost to this otherwise lackluster teen-hipster sitcom. The teens in question are Matty and Michael (Hunter Cope and Nicholas Braun)—BFFs since childhood—who now face graduation while struggling with raging hormones. Michael is flummoxed when Matty reveals that he's gay and has been since the duo were cutting up in sixth grade. Not limp-wristed gay, but regular-dude gay with an eye for other straight-acting guys—a revelation that gives Michael the willies and puts a serious twist on the get-laid mission. Up-and-comer Dakota Johnson is Em, their other best bud and the girl in whom they both confide. The young stars are moderately appealing, but their offhanded faux-improv mannerisms and speech are unconvincing (a familiar problem when mid-20s actors try to play 17)—and they're way out of their league compared to the comedy veterans in this so-so high school bro-mance. A strong optional purchase. (T. Fry)
