Part biography, part day-in-the-life profile, director Peter Vandermark's short film explores the work and career of David McPhail, who has written and/or illustrated over 150 books. Seen here at his picaresque New Hampshire home, McPhail reminiscences about his start in art (drawing on walls and floors with a black crayon as a toddler), his first book (1972's The Bear's Toothache), sources of inspiration, and goal of forming a one-on-one connection between himself and the reader. Details and stills from his books (such as Henry Bear's Park, Mole Music, and the popular Pig Pig series) are nicely interwoven throughout. A brief but engaging look at a well-spoken author excited about his work—which may in turn inspire youngsters to pursue their own dreams—this is recommended. Aud: E, P. (J. Williams-Wood)
