A more apt title would have been The Tunnel, where 12 disparate commuters have been trapped after a carload of punks crashes into a truck carrying toxic waste, causing a nifty explosion that seals off both ends. Enter Sylvester Stallone as Kip Latura, a disgraced Emergency Medical Services chief who must rally them together to lead them to safety. I thought this kind of film sunk with the Poseidon, but Sly, in what is said to be his swan song to action films, is as game as ever. The cliché-ridden script ("I'm scared, too") is a bigger threat than the toxic fumes and rising Hudson River waters. In the end, scurrying rats point the way out. But at 115 minutes, not soon enough. And what is the venerable Claire Bloom doing in a place like this? Not a necessary purchase. (K. Lee Benson)
